WINDSOR-ESSEX — The NDP MPPs for Windsor-Essex Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West), Percy Hatfield (Windsor-Tecumseh) and Taras Natyshak (Essex), released the following statement Friday after spending the day reaching out to workers potentially impacted by Fiat Chrysler’s announcement that it will lay off 1,500 workers at the end of September:
“We are heartbroken to learn of the 1,500 direct job losses in our community. Our thoughts are with these 1,500 workers and their families, whose financial security was ripped away and whose future is suddenly uncertain.
Workers are the lifeblood of the Windsor Assembly Plant, a fact that’s reflected in the high quality of products built there. We will fight to ensure that the province steps up and does everything in its power to stop these devastating job losses.
It is a point of pride for us that Windsor has led the auto and auto parts manufacturing industry for more than a century, delivering stable jobs to our community for generations. If these jobs are lost, the ripple effect will be felt throughout the community, and throughout the industry.
We know that Windsor-Essex can continue to be the world leader in manufacturing cars of the future. However, the government must take concrete action to ensure that Ontario stays on the cutting edge of this sector. We need an auto strategy. We need investments.
We will not stop fighting for these workers and their families. People in Windsor-Essex deserve so much better.”
