NDP MPPs demand Ford’s decision to leave Windsor-Essex in Stage 1 be reversed immediately

WINDSOR-ESSEX – NDP MPPs Taras Natyshak (Essex), Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) and Percy Hatfield (Windsor—Tecumseh) have issued a joint statement in response to Doug Ford’s announcement that Windsor-Essex will be the only region in Ontario to remain in Stage 1:

“This decision is unacceptable. Doug Ford has failed the people of Windsor-Essex. His government has ignored the COVID-19 situation in the region for months and has refused to take the actions that could have prevented or contained the outbreaks on farms. Now we learn that Windsor-Essex will be the only region in Ontario left behind in Stage 1, while Toronto and Peel can move ahead despite having much higher numbers of infections.

In spite of the sacrifices we have all made to flatten the curve, our efforts in Windsor-Essex have not been matched by the Ford government. If Doug Ford had deployed the tools to proactively address and prevent the outbreaks on farms and within the vulnerable migrant worker population, as we have been urging him to do, Windsor-Essex could have been in Stage 2 weeks ago. The lack of a plan for containment, testing and tracing on farm has penalized our regional economy.

A full reversal of this decision must be made immediately. We cannot afford to let Windsor-Essex be overlooked, while the rest of Ontario gets back to work.

The local medical officer of health must provide a public report detailing any advice or requests he’s made of Doug Ford and the Ministry of Health, and outline why the necessary actions have not been taken. We are also demanding the premier and the local medical officer of health directly explain to people here in Windsor-Essex why they are being forced to suffer the consequences of Ford’s failures and to name the date when the region can finally re-open.”
